TOWN INFORMATION

Paramus, originally derived from the Lenape word for the area, Peremessing, which meant that it had an abundant population of wild turkey.

On March 2, 1922, Paramus was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It was created from portions of what is now known as Rochelle Park (then Midland Township). Located 15 to 20 miles from Midtown Manhattan and approximately 8 miles from Upper Manhattan, the borough of Paramus is one of the largest shopping destinations in the country. Despite more limited shopping hours due to the most restrictive blue laws in the nation, Paramus generates over $5 billion in annual retail sales.

Paramus became one of the “truck farming” areas that helped New Jersey earn its nickname as the “Garden State.”

In 2013, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Paramus 21st best place to live in New Jersey. Also noteworthy, in 2011, Paramus Little League were State Champions.

The borough borders Emerson, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hackensack, Maywood, Oradell, Ridgewood, River Edge, Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook, and Washington Township.

The Senior Center offers programs and activities for residents of Paramus 55 years of age and older. They consist of education, fitness, informational, referral, counseling, social and recreational. Many activities that are offered to members include Bocce, Pokeeno and Bingo. Additionally, there is a Picnic Area on the rear grounds that is utilized for a variety of events.
