It is believed that Closter was named after Frederick Closter, who received a grant of several thousand acres as a military reward from King Charles I of England. Closter was an affluent community along the Hudson River, filled with farmlands, a commerce area and transportation by rail to and from New York City. Even to this day many of the streets are named after early Dutch and French settlers.

Closter is a borough in Bergen County, in the New York metro area. It is located ten miles northwest of New York City. With all of the shopping centers, recreational facilities, medical, educational and legal resources Closter continues to maintain its role as the ‘Hub’ of the Northern Valley.

The Closter school system consists of the Hillside Elementary School, The Tenakill Middle School and high school students attend the very highly rated Northern Valley Regional High School.

Closter is also very rich in ethnic and cultural diversity with a population of approx. 8,200 people. Residents continue to enjoy this side of the river with attractions like the numerous nature centers, Brooks Wild Life Refuge and a pond used for fishing in the spring and ice skating in the winter.

Closter Swim Club  | Closter Swim Club is the best bargain in town. We are a private club open to residents of Closter and the surrounding towns. The pool is open part time from Memorial Day to approximately mid-June, and full time from then until Labor Day. Facilities include a regulation NCAA Collegiate sized pool with two (2) low diving boards and a wading pool for our members less than six (6) years of age. Children can take advantage of our free swimming lessons and can join our swim team and/or diving team. Private lessons are also available for a fee. Amenities include an enclosed picnic area where you and your family can bring a picnic lunch or plan a barbecue. We have a playground and equipment for basketball, horseshoes, volleyball, softball, knock hockey and more. Special events are held throughout the season.
