TOWN INFORMATION
Bergenfield was originally named by the Dutch settlers in 1894 as Schraalenburgh. Once the Railroad from New York decided to build a station through Schraalenburgh the early settlers decided to change the name to Bergenfield. In 1923 Bergenfield sponsored the construction of the George Washington Bridge. Little did the residents know that this bridge would bring exponential growth to their small community of 8,000. Soon the population doubled and the need for schools, shopping and Churches developed. This once small community has grown to approx. 30,000 residents.
The Bergenfield Public Schools offer programs and services that enable its students to achieve their educational goals and become lifelong learners, community boulders and global citizens. The districts provides a safe and nurturing setting in which instruction is aimed at educating the whole child by promoting academic growth consistent with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. There are five elementary schools serving Kindergarten – 5th grade – Franklin School with 454 students, Hoover School with 239 students, Jefferson School with 280 students, Lincoln School with 417 students, Washington School with 280 students – Roy W. Brown Middle School with 907 students in grades 6 – 8 and Bergenfield High School with 1,287 students.New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Bergenfield as its 231st best place to live in its 2008 rankings of the “Best Places To Live” in New Jersey.
