Demarest is most recognized for the rolling lands covered with forests and fields hidden away from the metropolis nearby. Its special character derives from the beautiful Duck Pond and many areas of open recreation. The Borough of Demarest originally got its name from the early settlers known as Demarest. Their homestead still stands to this day at 277 County Road. For over 200 years Demarest residents have striven to preserve and protect its beauty. The famous Peace Site Gazebo located at the Duck Pond is a special place for residence and visitors alike. Convenient location with easy commute to New York City, small borough size and a terrific school system all make this town very desirable and special. It is truly a wonderful place to live. With a small population today of around 4,800, Demarest prides itself in its volunteers who make our town a caring and safe community. There are many volunteer opportunities and all efforts are appreciated.

Demarest’s students are educated in the district’s two elementary schools, County Road K-1 and Luther Lee Emerson 2-4, and the Demarest Middle School which is home to grades 5-8. Their successes have been the result of a fantastic collaboration between the Board of Education, administration, faculty, and support staff. This high level of achievement could not have been attained without the involvement of the parents and community.

NYC is a short driving distance away via the George Washington Bridge which is only 8.5 miles from the center of Demarest thus making it an ideal suburb location for commuting to and from Manhattan. Rte. 9W & The Palisades Parkway, both along the eastern boundary of the borough, put the commuter within minutes driving time of the GW Bridge. Public transportation is also available with frequent direct bus service to NYC as well as to other points in NJ. It continues to appeal to those who seek a peaceful community near the thriving metropolis of New York. Most new residents are professionals or business executives who like the small town charm, peaceful atmosphere, fine schools, and the simple commute to NYC.

Demarest Senior Center | All activities are held at the Railroad Depot. Welcomes all residents and neighbors ages 55 and above. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of the month. All activities except Arts & Crafts will be held daily except Tuesday from 1-4:30pm. A monthly trip to Atlantic City is held on the third Tuesday of each month at a cost of $25.00. The trip departs from the United Methodist Church. 

Demarest Senior Citizens Club | Meets the second and fourth Fridays of the month at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Refreshments are served at the meetings. All citizens of Demarest who are 60 years young and older are invited to join the club.
